New message from Clay...

It certainly is relaxing watching football these days. In the last couple of days I watched Plexico and Tiki and Romo, and Terrel, and other strange names cavort and dance about, and it didn’t affect me even a little bit. I didn’t get upset or excited; in fact I was puzzled that other people with names, just as strange would tear me up, and drive my blood pressure off the scale, and make me upset and lose sleep by doing the same non consequential exercises.

The curse of the Packers has to be something that should cause concern within the medical community.

I can watch large, people I have never, and will never meet, do things I could never hope to do, that have no consequence for me or anyone I know, and experience near heart failure and mental collapse on a weekly basis. On the other hand, I can watch mirror images of the same do the same and maintain total tranquility.

No other team seems to have that effect. I can watch Dodger fans jump around, and watch Bear fans froth at the mouth, and Eagle beagles do high fives, and Laker backers do whatever it is that basketball lovers do, but no where is there the rabidity of Green Bay Packer followers. We have something that borderlines religious fanaticism that doesn’t seem to diminish with age. In fact the personalities of the team members may change but the attitude remains.

The Hutsons and Grimes and Rotes and Hornungs and Taylors , and Starrs and Thurstons have been replaced by Favre and Green and KGB, ad infinitum, but the names don’t matter, nor do the large people wearing the names. It’s like believing in the Fat Guy with the Red Suit and white beard.

I’m glad I have the curse and I wouldn’t trade it or give it away for anything. It’s something I have no control over, but am proud of. I know I’ll never lose it nor would I ever hope to.

Memory of this season is still hot, but yet I eagerly await everything I know 2007 is going to bring. There will be a new Green Bay Packer lineup, doing the same things that have made me crazy for too many years, and I look forward to it.

God Bless You All. I hope we can all commiserate next year.

Clay,

Malcolm, the kids, and I will surely miss you. Isn't it great that since we have known each other our Packer Fan base has grown due to family growth. Oh and speaking of Az. my parents live in Goodyear, Az., so when we visit them I will contact you and your family.

So another season starts and we all get to come together in person and in our thoughts. Dan I love to see you on the news, you look good. When I see you I start yelling "DANS ON TV!!!" Hey, maybe we'll get to see you at All American Pizza?

Bob Drace and Mike save us a seat because the Simmons Clan will be there. Bye for now...GO PACK GO!!!!

Word from Clay...

Well, we’re getting settled in here in Tucson. Since the Bekins Van arrived on June 19 with all of our worldly possessions, the temperature has been three digit every day. The hottest has been somewhere in the vicinity of 120, although once in my car it registered 129. My Son Jeff compared it to living on the Sun.

On the good side, we don’t have to worry about black widow spiders here because the scorpions eat them. Rattlesnakes generally handle the scorpions if it would ever cool off.

On the important side, I’ve located a place called Old Father’s Inn which shows Packer Games. I don’t think it’s a dedicated Packer Club, but rather a Sports Bar that shows the Pack. I asked if there were any other ex-patriot Wisconsinites, and received a vacant stare for an answer. No Landsmen, just a lot of Packer Fans. In my many years upon this earth, I’ve discovered that if there are four people who follow professional football, at least one will be a Packer fan, and sometimes two. I’ll keep on looking.

Tombstone is only about 80 miles from here and I seem to recall Wyatt Earp being from Wisconsin, so that’s probably why there are so many non-Wisconsin Packer Fans.

As we are about to go into August, I am totally without an opinion about the oncoming Season. I wish Brett would have made his announcement earlier to help establish a team mindset. It’s hard to build without a cornerstone. At this point, Donald Driver is the known commodity. Favre can be great unless he feels he has to carry the team. We going to miss Long of Foot. Our new kicker reputedly has a penchant for hooking…… indoors. Hope my source of information had a smudge on that part of his crystal ball.

I’ve seen or heard a lot of games since Arnie Herber went back for a pass, and I’m going to start this season with the same fervor and anxiety I’ve always had. I sincerely wish I could be with all of you again. I will be in spirit.

Please keep in touch with me.

GO PACK !!!!!

We lost Craig Nall today. He is a Buffalo Bill! I sure didn't see this one coming!! Last time I check the Packer Roster, we had three quarterbacks. Now we have Brett Favre and Aaron Rogers. My son tells me, we can get Joey Harrington. Or maybe Mike McMahon, or Andy Hall, tell me this is not true???????????

The good news is that Nall is Brett's best friend and they went deer hunting last month and presumably talked. Nall wanted to remain a Packer and the Packers wanted him back, but he wanted a chance to be a #2 or possible a #1 QB. He knew if Brett came back he'd be stuck at #3. Many believe he feels or knows that Brett is coming back!!! If that's the case, does it really matter who's assigned to carry the clipboard?

More thoughts from Clay.....

I’ve been corresponding with a few of the guys over the Winter and I think we’re all a little concerned about the unknown. A new Coach brings his entourage and his personality to the table. I’ve been watching the Wisconsin papers, and unless I’m looking under the wrong rocks, things have been quiet.

Heard rumbles about Longwell, but the noise stopped, and likewise there’s been a void about the health of our backfield. Haven’t picked up on Green ( other than his legal problems), Davenport, or Gado. And I wish Brett would give us an aye or nay. I don’t think his indecision is helping Aaron Rogers’ attitude.

When we get into the draft, we should get a better indication of where the team’s headed. We had a severe hurt without our veteran Guards and actually we need a lot in nearly every area.

I think Nick Barnett and Donald Driver were the two brightest stars on the team. Both guys showed talent and a lot of guts. Both are a little small for their positions, but their hearts more than made for size.

I was a little upset to see Diggs go because he was a decent team player. There may have been underlying reasons for dropping him, but we’ll see how the cards play.

I will miss the Club, watching Malcolm and Cynthia’s Brett grow, trading opinions with Bob, Mike, Dave and Dan, but I’ll sure be with you all in spirit. I’ll see if I can find some Wisconsin transplants around Tucson, but it won’t be the same. If you don’t mind, I’ll add my two cents once in a while, and let you know what’s going on from an AZ viewpoint.

Long time member Clay Granacki is packing up his Cheesehead and moving to Arizona. One of our most loyal members, Clay will certainly be missed. We hope that luck, good health and a great place to watch the Packers are in your future.

Here are a few words from Clay:

On a personal note, we’re (my wife and I) are leaving California.
We ‘re having a house built in Marana, AZ, which is about 15 miles out of Tucson, on the Phoenix side, off of Interstate 10.

I figure on hanging up my briefcase on my next birthday which will make me 68 on October 5. California is the place I always wanted to live, but it’s just too expensive to live here.

Our house in AZ won’t be completed until around July, and I’ve worked out a deal with the new owner of my house whereby I can rent until the house is built, so we’ll still be around for a while. I can work out of an airplane and computer until October, so I can limp along at it until I get put out on my iceberg.

I’ll always have great memories of our Packer Club, and I’ll never stop being with you in spirit.

Please keep in touch with me via Jeff, and through e mail, and I’ll do the same.
